Interior Buildouts Inc was hired to transform an old burned up medical laboratory into a modern 9,500 square-foot daycare facility. This building started with nothing but a shell and some bare studs. It includes large playrooms and classrooms along with a playground, prep kitchen, laundry room and toddlers play area.
Converting a fire-damaged medical laboratory into a childcare centre is close to the widest possible change of use. The existing building offered a shell and some bare studs and nothing else that could be carried forward, so the project began with strip-out and structural preparation before any new layout could be set. Every service in the 9,500 square foot facility was installed new.
Daycare facilities carry requirements that most commercial interiors do not. Sightlines matter, because staff need to supervise across rooms rather than around corners. Surfaces have to be durable and cleanable at child height. Sanitary provision, egress widths and separation between age groups are all governed rather than discretionary. The toddler play area, the classrooms and the large playrooms each had to satisfy those rules while still working as a single legible building.
The prep kitchen and laundry room are the parts of a childcare build that quietly determine whether the facility runs well. Both are service-heavy: dedicated drainage, ventilation, power and equipment clearances have to be resolved early, because retrofitting them after the layout is fixed is expensive. Getting them right at the design stage is the difference between a building that operates smoothly and one that fights its staff daily.
