Gymnastics Center

The team at IBI transformed an old brake shop into a kids gymnastics center. This project required us to tear out all existing structures and fill the large repair pits with concrete. We spray foamed the building to help insulate sound and heat. The gym area was hung out with plywood to make it kid proof.

Project scope

An automotive repair building is one of the more difficult starting points for a children’s facility. A brake shop is built around vehicle access, hard-wearing industrial surfaces and service pits set into the slab. A gymnastics centre needs clear open volume, safe surfaces, controlled acoustics and an environment designed around children moving at speed. Almost nothing carries over.

Filling the repair pits

The large service pits had to be filled with concrete before anything else could proceed. Structural voids in a slab are not something to build over, and in a building where children will be running and landing, the floor has to be continuous, level and load-bearing across its whole area. That work happened first because every subsequent trade depended on it.

Insulation, acoustics and a kid-proof envelope

Spray foam insulation was applied to help control both sound and heat. Industrial shells are noisy and thermally poor, and a gymnastics centre generates a great deal of noise inside while needing to stay comfortable for children and parents. Spray foam addresses both in a single application and seals a building envelope that was never designed to be occupied this way. Lining the gym area with plywood then gave the walls a surface that tolerates impact, equipment fixings and daily use by children, rather than a finish that would need patching every month.

Industrial conversions across Northeast Florida

Interior Buildouts converts industrial and automotive buildings into new uses throughout Jacksonville.
